I didn't post yesterday, but I did go to mass. I was online 9:30-10am, 2:15-3:15pm, and 4:15-5:15pm. So only 2.5 hours. Not too terrible.

Today I swam a mile. I've been online from 2:30 to 4pm now, but that's all I'm going to be on today. That's a mere 1.5 hours. Hey, things are looking up.

Well, I was right about yesterday. And today has been pretty wretched. So, Internet 9:30-11am, 1-1:30pm, and now 3:30-5pm. Admittedly that is only 3.5 hours. Much better than yesterday. And I did get work done today (even if it was all last-minute).

I'm getting off now. But I didn't even get in my planned swim. What is going on?

I haven't posted in a year and a half. I was thinking about waiting for the two-year mark, but I'm going to post anyway. Since I just left a comment on a friend's blog with this profile, I figured I could start posting again.

I'm not much of an exhibitionist, although I'm fine with self-revelation, so I have no pressing need to write. Nor do I have opinions that I demand to foist upon the world. I have opinions, but they usually just get me into trouble when I share them.

So, let's see where my blog posts go. Maybe I'll use this to log some sort of activity. Ooh! I waste too much time online. From now on, I have to post on this blog every day I'm online, and I have to include the total time spent. Crud. So, today, I was on 10-noon; 12:30-2pm; 3-4pm; and I predict 5-6:30pm, followed by 8-midnight. That's 10 hours total. That's ridiculous. At least that gives me a lot of room for improvement.

I'll also mention when I do something cool, including either self-improvement related (like exercise, sleeping a full night, doing spiritual reading, praying, and so forth) or related to responsible work (getting projects done before the last minute). Today I did squeeze in most of a mass and got my ashes. Hurray for Ash Wednesday!

Who are you? By what do you define your identity?

If you base your identity on something changeable, then your identity changes when that something changes. Identity change is scary, and fear of identity loss can motivate extreme behaviors.

Consider the implication of defining your identity with something changeable: weight, image, popularity, wealth, power, or status. Even things like friends, family, virtue, or holiness, are changeable. What happens to your identity and sense of self if one of these things changes?

Are you willing to improve in a matter you consider defining?

Just as a follow-up to the last post (the esoteric one), consider attraction. The feeling of attraction is not a choice, but rather a reaction. It is the animal instinct that ensures the propagation of a species.

Obviously attraction is informed by reason. Brute animals cannot be attracted to a witty or wise man. On the other hand, attraction is formed by many things, some of which are quite bad. The daughter of an alcoholic will find abusive, alcoholic men to be attractive. Other things as well can contribute to being attracted to a bad choice.

Attraction alone is a poor basis for loving someone.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. In this case, probably a cheap imitation.

Consider this: the Buddha's central insight, in my opinion, is that desire is the cause of suffering. If one completely gives up desire, including the desire not to desire, then one will be free of suffering. Even physical pain only causes suffering if one desires not to undergo it.

Now, real love is a matter of desiring the best for someone.

That hurts.
